Are You Being Selfish?

Are You Being Selfish?

December 29, 2020

Being selfish is something nobody wants to be accused of, so it is often an easy accusation to make. This happens usually when someone is feeling on the back foot and is what I would consider "fighting dirty." Calling someone selfish is often just playing the victim, and usually used as a manipulation tactic. Even when we live through stages of our lives where "we just want to be selfish right now!" we're not really being selfish. During those times we are usually just exploring what we want, but had previously not allowed ourselves to indulge.

There are a lot of ways we can take care of ourselves. Everyone is going to do this differently and there is no right way to do it. Of course, we have to ask ourselves if we are actually taking care of ourselves. Many times we can defend, attack, or escape, and may try to convince others we are taking care of ourselves while we really know how much guilt or shame we are carrying.

Being selfish can be defending, escaping, and attacking, however, it is not selfish to take care of yourself as Karith Foster clearly states in this week's episode of the Recover Yourself podcast. Karith and I talk all about identity and how we can double down on ideas we see as part of our identity.

I love you,
