Stop Trying to Help Others
April 5, 2022
As I was returning from my Dark Retreat in Guatemala I sat with a father and his daughter. We got to talking about my work and he asked about someone close to him that might have a problem with alcohol. I gave him the advice I could about them but then I had to lay down the truth. If he really wanted to help this person, he would have to ask the question he believed this other person needed to ask, of themself. His question would have been, "Where, in my own life, am I stubborn and unwilling to accept help?" If he were to do this, I guaranteed that he would perceive the other person's situation change.
This quote points to the fact that we can not change anyone, nor can anyone change us. We all just do what we do because of what we're perceiving because that is all we can ever know.
If we decide to question our perceptions, especially as it relates to areas where we are most significantly triggered, we will see the world completely transform around us.
As the Tao states:
Do you want to improve the world?
I don't think it can be done.
The world is sacred.
It can't be improved.
If you tamper with it, you'll ruin it.
If you treat it like an object, you'll lose it...
