What Are You Choosing and What is Habitual?
How many things in your life do you do without thinking?
How many habits are running your life?
From our coffee in the morning to Netflix at night it is way easier to lean on habit than it is to figure out what we want right now. 9 to 5 jobs make habit-forming so easy, but don't think that it's any less common for those outside of the 9-5 work-a-day world to form just as many if not more habits.
Habits help us conserve calories and, biologically, that is a benefit. The truth is that today we needn't conserve calories because they are so plentiful. Overriding our natural tendency to lean on habits is something we can all do in order to improve our lives and burn calories.
You can simply start by recognizing those things you are doing in your life that you are not outright choosing. If you can't find anything, ask yourself, what are you sure you are going to do tomorrow. If you know that answer today, then how is it a choice you'll make tomorrow?
